Il film si ispira liberamente a "Professione Vacanze", una delle serie Tv più comiche e più cult degli anni '80, e nasce a seguito della pressante richiesta di migliaia di spettatori , per lo più giovani.
Il film verrà girato a Scanzano Ionico all'Hotel portogreco dove Gerry Calà ha deciso che si terrà parte del casting: 1 "attore" tra gli ospiti sarà scelto ogni settimana direttamente dal suo staff

Nelle 5 settimane di riprese cinematografiche, gli ospiti dell'hotel potranno fare la comparsa o addirittura l'attore! 6 ospiti delle due strutture saranno infatti scelti e reciteranno una vera battuta nel film "Operazione vacanze".
Gli altri ospiti potranno divertirsi a fare le comparse oppure potranno rilassarsi al sole senza nessun impegno, sbirciando ogni tanto nel set.

La trama del film, che inizia le sue riprese a settembre, dice così:

"Portogreco è un bellissimo villaggio turistico che affaccia sulla costa jonica della Basilicata. Mentre ne vediamo scorrere le immagini dall'alto, uno spot radiofonico ne decanta le doti: confort, animazione, sport, ottima cucina, servizio impeccabile. In realtà avviene tutto il contrario. I clienti, infatti, stanno lasciando in massa il villaggio protestando e smadonnando. Il Capo Villaggio, un giovane dall’aria imbelle e disperata , li rincorre scongiurandoli di restare. Ma è tutto inutile.

La figlia del proprietario Perla tenta di convincere il padre proprietario del posto a dare in gestione il villaggio a dei professionisti. Il testardo padre invece decide di dare in mano il villaggio ad un nuovo Capo-Villaggio Lello Spada, alias Bebo, alias Gerry Calà.
Bebo, scapolone di 50 anni che vive come ne avesse 20, con la passione per le belle donne ...degli altri, ruba l'identità del suo amico Lello Spada (Capo-Villaggio di trentennale esperienza) per salvarsi dal boss locale cui ha "rubato" la donna e scappa a gestire il Villaggio.
Lì Bebo si rende conto che non avrà per nulla vita facile e tra scherzi del personale, ex-fiamme sul piede di guerra e scioperi, ma grazie ai suoi colpi geniali arriva il lieto fine e un premio molto prestigioso.
